On Saturday night, persons in Cambridge, St. James got the early Christmas gift they rightfully deserve.
The Magnum '10 Long 10 Strong' free anniversary concert series kicked off in the community and it was nothing short of spectacular. Patrons can attest to the fact that too often do they attend shows and there are slight lulls in segments, this time, not so. The show kicked off at exactly 10 pm and Cutty and Marc Chin of Coppershot had the crowd rocking to the sounds of Dancehall songs of yester-year and in no time it was almost impossible to exit the tightly-packed venue.
But music wasn't all Coppershot offered. Comedians in their own right, they invited male patrons to dance to current Dancehall selections. Eagerly, three old men dashed onto the stage. "Sen' on a mix," Cutty told Marc.
Immediately all three men broke out into their best dance-moves. The eldest man on stage, did something that can only be described as 'the earthquake'...a really intense one. As the man shook, glided and did the 'robot' dance across the stage to the sounds of Vybz Kartel and more, he was soon declared the winner by the crowd. However, before he collected his Magnum gift basket and exited the stage, he asked to thrill the crowd one more time; this time with a different song selection. "Mi want one ah my kindah song dem so mi can do one nex' dance," he shouted to Cutty and Marc.
An old Rocksteady tune blared from the speakers; still, patrons got 'the earthquake'.
"Alright," said Cutty as he ushered the man (who now walked while doing the earthquake) off-stage, "we soon call yuh back pon stage."
Other highlights of the night were: Ity and Fancy Cat's comedy segment; a lap-dance the Magnum girls gave a lucky male fan on stage; the Dance Xpressions' well-choreographed dance; the fashion showcased by fashion designer, Biggy; Magnum Stone Love's set and of course the performances by Konshens and Lady Saw.
When Ity and Fancy Cat took the stage, they immediately got to work asking the 'ugliest men and women' in the audience to get on stage. Oddly, persons were clamoring to do so. As they stood before the crowd, Ity and Fancy paired them off, saying they were couples for the night. Then came the twist. They were asked to sing for each other.
Etana and Albarosie's Blessings, was the song selection chosen. As the three "couples" looked into each others eyes and sang, one man had the crowd cheering and laughing -- for the wrong reasons.
"When a man love a woman and a woman love a man a Jah-Jah blessings and ehuhh uuughh eeehuuhyeaah eeeh," he sang; the crowd erupted with laughter. Another "couple" : a short rasta man and a much taller woman with a blond and brown wig walked away the winners.
Soon after, the Magnum girls and Miss Kitty made their way on stage. Some minutes after, Miss Kitty asked for a male patron to get on stage. The patron, Dwayne, who said he came with his girlfriend, was asked to "just sit and enjoy the ride. Nuh touch nutten. Nuh touch none ah dem. Jus' siddung and enjoy," Miss Kitty demanded.
As Jeremih's Birthday Sex played, the girls took turns dancing and stripping Dwayne. As they grinded into his groin caressed his chest and did flips unto his crotch his eyes bulged, and he heavily gulped his Magnum. When it was finally time for him to leave the stage, a half-naked Dwayne slowly limped away.
"Yuh alright?" Miss Kitty asked, "smaddy watch him. Mi see summen a bulge. Mi nuh want him stick up and puncture nobody when him a walk."
Next up were the Magnum Stone Love selectors, who were also a hit with the fans. Their steamy set, ushered new Dancehall/Reggae sensation, Konshens on stage.
There, he reeled off a significant amount of hits, including, Winner,Good Girl Gone Bad,Pretty Devil, This Means Money and others. The crowd, sang, danced and cheered to every selection.
When Lady Saw entered the stage to the sound of a speeding bike, and a live video was shown of her backstage, the crowd roared. By this time, the crowd spanned the entire venue, filled the street, so much so persons were seen the upstairs of business porches and on a road directly across from a ditch.
Aptly called 'the Mumma of the Dancehall', she ignited the stage with past and current hits including Beg Yuh, Jealous, Chat To Mi Back,I've Got Your Man, Walk Out and a canon of other songs. She then launched into a well-known early 90s favourite, Backshot. She then declared to the men she called on stage to dance with the Magnum girls, "Spank it! Spank that ass!"
To which one man fumbled for a milli-second and spanked his own.
The show ended at 2 a.m. with a series of counteractions between Coppershot and Magnum Stone Love crews. Needless to say, patrons had a blast.
