As the cellphone technology advances, the security of your phone could be jeopardized by hackers and spies. It is common knowledge that cellphones have all sorts of apps but these apps could also mean that hackers can use the flows in the apps to install spyware on your cellphone leading to identity theft, credit card and bank information interception. For more information read this article by JR Raphael, a contributing writer from Geeks are sexy. "Your cellphone connects you to the world, but it could also be giving anyone from your boss to your wife a window into your every move. The same technology that lets you stay in touch on-the-go can now let others tap into your private world — without you ever even suspecting something is awry".
The new generation
Long gone are the days of simple wiretapping, when the worst your phone could do was let someone listen in to your conversations. The new generation of cell phone spying tools provides a lot more power.
Eavesdropping is easy. All it takes is a two-minute software install and someone can record your calls and monitor your text messages. They can even set up systems to be automatically alerted when you dial a certain number, then instantly patched into your conversation. Anyone who can perform a basic internet search can find the tools and figure out how to do it in no time.

How UK oil company Trafigura tried to cover up African pollution disaster
The Guardian can reveal evidence today of a massive cover-up by the British oil trader Trafigura, in one of the worst pollution disasters in recent history.
Internal emails show that Trafigura, which yesterday suddenly announced an offer to pay compensation to 31,000 west African victims, was fully aware that its waste dumped in Ivory Coast was so toxic that it was banned in Europe.
Thousands of west Africans besieged local hospitals in 2006, and a number died, after the dumping of hundreds of tonnes of highly toxic oil waste around the country's capital, Abidjan. Official local autopsy reports on 12 alleged victims appeared to show fatal levels of the poisonous gas hydrogen sulphide, one of the waste's lethal byproducts.

Scientists Join Forces to Explain HIV Spread in Central and East Africa.
Scientists studying biology and geography may seem worlds apart, but together they have answered a question that has defied explanation about the spread of the HIV-1 epidemic in Africa.
Writing in the September issue of AIDS, a research team led by scientists at the University of Florida explained why two subtypes of HIV-1 — the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS — held steady at relatively low levels for more than 50 years in west central Africa before erupting as an epidemic in east Africa in the 1970s.
Essentially, the explanation for the HIV explosion — obscured until now — involves the relative ease with which people can travel from city to city in east Africa as opposed to the difficulties faced by people living in the population centers of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the point where HIV emerged from west central Africa in its spread to the east.

Local traditional dancing group Ditaola is now based in Mafikeng, South Africa, where they hope to take the music industry by storm. Group leader Lesetlha Segomotso says they moved to South Africa at the beginning of this year. He says the market in South Africa is better, adding that they want to establish themselves south of the border. In terms of business, he says, things "are far much better there". Segomotso says business in Botswana has not been good especially after the implementation of the liquor regulations, which reduced the trading hours of bars and nightclubs. |
